For more than a century Kodak has been widely recognised as a reputable photo cameras manufacturer. Since the company’s inception in early 1880s Kodak engineers invented numerous technologies and standards, which are still used today by professional and amateur photographers.
However, due to recent digital revolution Kodak was overshadowed by young rapidly evolving technology companies, which provide not just mono-functional cameras, but all-in-one truly practical devices that include camera, phone, player, etc. In 2012 Kodak nearly went bankrupt, but escaped its fate by changing to a new business model of serving commercial customers.
Next year the company plans to catch up on the lost digital decade and present its new stunning device, Kodak Instamatic, at CES 2015 . Instamatic is a new mobile Android-based gadget that will look like a camera and phone in one. It will combine the functions of both as well.
According to the official press-release, the new device will be “aimed at – but not exclusively for – consumers who want a high-end experience but aren’t always as comfortable using increasingly complicated mobile devices as they would like to be“.
So far, three versions of the Kodak Instamatic smartphone are available for pre-order at the official website. The prices are as follows: Instamatic 14w – $199, Instamatic 14 – $249, Instamatic 15 Ultra – $349.
The cheapest Instamatic 14w will come with such specs as 14 MP camera with 4288 x 3216 px resolution, 4x Optical Zoom, PixPro 24-140mm f/3.9-5.9 lenses, single LED flashlight, 4-Inch touch screen display, 512MB of internal memory, anddimensions 116.3 x 60.1 x 12.3 mm.
Mid-priced Instamatic 14 will have the same internals as Instamatic 14w, except flashlight, which will be RGB LED. 4G LTE connectivity module will also be added to this version.
But if you are looking for a really advanced device, the Instamatic 15 Ultra is for you. The model priced $349 has a 16 MP camera with 4608 x 3456 px resolution, 10x Optical Zoom, PixPro 24-260mm f/2.4-5.3 lenses, Micro 4/3 lens mount system, LED grid flashlight, 5-Inch touch screen display, 8GB of internal memory, and dimensions 132.3 x 84.2 x 22.6 mm. Instamatic 15 Ultra will be able to record 1080p Full HD video at 30 frames per second. All versions will be equipped with Wi-Fi module.
The specs are not necessarily outstanding. Many Android phone manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC, Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi, Meizu, Oppo, OnePlus, etc. already produce mobile devices with better features. However, superior specs are just numbers/figures in prospects and brochures. Kodak is famous not just for the descriptive figures of its devices, but for outstanding image quality. Kodak also prides itself for being a trendsetter in photo cameras industry. If the new product of this legendary company proves its merit by excellent picture quality, much better than that of its rivals, we could expect insatiable demand for Kodak phone&camera devices.
